Pulmonary Arteriovenous Malformations

چکیده
HKJGOM 2011; 11 (1) 67 Introduction Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (PAVMs) are rare vascular disorders known to produce life-threatening complications, including haemoptysis, intrapleural haemorrhage, stroke, brain abscess, and hypoxaemia. Since its first description by Churton in 18971, more than 500 cases have been reported in the literature2. Pregnancy and PAVM are strongly linked with adverse outcomes, due to an increased risk of complications3-8. Management dilemmas arise from concerns about fetal radiation exposure from both diagnostic and therapeutic procedures involving ionising radiation. Furthermore, the ideal treatment modality for this condition during pregnancy is unclear. Surgery has traditionally been regarded as the treatment of choice and is potentially life saving in cases complicated by pulmonary haemorrhage. More recently, in selected cases, transcatheter embolotherapy (TCE) has demonstrated impressive initial results. Pulmonary Arteriovenous Malformation Surgery in a Pregnant Woman: A Case Report
Background and purpose: Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (PAVM) are lung lesions that affect most of the periphery of the lower lobes, and are manifested by dyspnea, hemoptysis, and hemothorax. Pregnancy is one of the conditions in which these malformations appear due to hemodynamic changes and hormonal factors such as increased levels of estrogen. This paper presents the case of a pregna...
متن کاملDiffuse Pulmonary Arteriovenous Malformation in Children: Essential Value of Contrast Echocardiography in Diagnosis
Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (PAVM) are abnormal communications between pulmonary arteries and pulmonary veins, and most commonly congenital in nature. Although rare, it is an important consideration in cyanotic patients of unknown cause. We report 3 cases with diffuse PAVM in children with different clinical manifestations and initial diagnosis was made by transthoracic contrast echoc...
متن کاملImpact of Pulmonary Arteriovenous Malformations on Respiratory–Related Quality of Life in Patients with Hereditary Haemorrhagic Telangiectasia
Fifteen to fifty percent of patients with hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia have pulmonary arteriovenous malformations. The objective of this study was to measure the effect of the presence of pulmonary arteriovenous malformations and of their embolisation on respiratory-related quality of life (QoL). We prospectively recruited patients with a diagnosis of hereditary haemorrhagic telangiec...

Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations are abnormal direct communications between pulmonary arteries and pulmonary veins. Transcatheter embolotherapy is the preferred treatment method because of its less invasive nature. There are several methods for the treatment of pulmonary arteriovenous malformations, such as detachable occlusion balloon and coil embolization. The Amplatzer Vascular Plug is ...
متن کاملPulmonary arteriovenous malformation: a rare cause of cyanosis in a child.
Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations are rare vascular anomalies. We report a 12-year-old girl who presented with exertional dyspnoea, cyanosis and clubbing since the age of five years, and multiple pulmonary arteriovenous malformations. Computed tomography pulmonary angiogram showed a large pulmonary arteriovenous malformation at the lower lobe of the right lung. Pulmonary angiogram showed a ...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the occurrence of pulmonary arteriovenous malformations after a Fontan operation in the left isomerism and absent inferior vena cava. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed 19 patients with the left isomerism and absent inferior vena cava who underwent Fontan operations at our institution. We divided the patients into two groups: bilateral superior vena cava (group A, n=9),...
